San Diego Science Festival Selects Winner of Mascot Contest PDF Print E-mail

From Everything San Diego!

On Friday March 5th the San Diego Science Festival (SDSF) announced the winner of their Mascot Contest with a surprise visit to the winner’s classroom at La Jolla High School.  Colin Weber, 17, submitted the winning mascot concept and was chosen as the grand prize winner among more than 300 entries. The submitted drawing showcased a world globe personified as a scientist wearing a lab coat. The committee that chose Colin’s drawing saw the bigger concept behind the idea. The San Diego Science Festival is a local event yet its effect has worldwide potential. As thousands of San Diego students are inspired to pursue careers in science related fields through the efforts of the San Diego Science Festival, their futures are sure to impact San Diego and beyond.

Specifically, the concept was chosen for 3 distinct characteristics:

  1. The earth concept – this brings elements of sustainability, globalization, and a big picture look regarding the impact of science
  2. Approachability – the design projected an innocence and light hearted feel
  3. Widespread appeal – younger audiences can identify with the charm and “cuddly” nature of the mascot while older audiences can identify with the larger concept of green living and uniting the world through science.

During the surprise visit Colin Weber was awarded a $1000 grand prize check, presented by the Padres’ Swinging Friar mascot. The Padres are a partner of the event and will host the March 27, 2010 San Diego Science Festival Expo Day at PETCO Park.

Local illustrator and graphic designer Jade Throgmorton from Burning Eye Studio created the redesigned concept for the mascot. Inspired by Colin’s original drawing, Jade wanted to capture the lighthearted nature of the character while meeting the request of the SDSF team and advisory board members to add elements showing the spirit of San Diego. This San Diego spirit is found in the incorporation of a surfboard, sunglasses, and flip-flops.
