What is there to do at Expo Day?
You'll want to visit booths which have interactive games or experiments, critters or slime, puzzles or toys -- each showcasing interesting ways science and technology fit into Your Body, Your Transit, Your Heroes, Your Sports, Your Future, Your Art, Your Discoveries, and Your Planet. Get your Expo Day Map stamped as you visit booths from each category. Meanwhile, performances run from 10:30 to 5:30: musicians, magicians, humorists, bugs and more on four stages!

Will there be anything for my little one?   Is there anything for adults?
The 300 booth activities span the age ranges, and don't forget to visit the stages!
  • Little ones may enjoy the inflatable whales as part of the SeaWorld Killer Whale Educational Show at 10:30 or the musical puppets starring in the Science Spectacular at 2:30.
  • Adults will enjoy the Ethics Matters discussions and laugh with the several science humorists performing throughout the day.
  • FULL Map and Performance Schedule here >>

Which part of Balboa Park should I go to?
You'll want to visit the booths along El Prado between the Museum of Man and Bea Evinson Foundation. Check out the experiences inside the San Diego Natural History Museum and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center - entrance to both museums is FREE! Walk south to see exhibits inside and outside of the Hall of Champions Sports Museum, Automotive Museum, and Air and Space Museum. You'll pass information booths and volunteers along the way to guide you. Most of the fun is outside, so wear sunscreen, but don't miss the indoor exhibits and performances!

TEACHERS: Give your students extra credit for doing some cool science out of the classroom... We will be handing out this map at Expo Day and students will have the opportunity to earn stamps for activities.

STUDENTS: Ask your teacher if you can get extra credit or community service credit for attending or volunteering at Expo Day!

life technologies

Life Technologies Corporation is a global biotechnology tools company dedicated to improving the human condition. Their systems, consumables and services enable researchers to accelerate scientific exploration, driving to discoveries and developments that make life even better.

“The people of Life Technologies want to do things that make life better; whether through sequencing the entire human genome or making strides in personalized medicine. Our company is trying to give back to the world. Life Technologies enables researchers to accelerate scientific exploration, driving discoveries and developments that make life even better,” says Heather Virdo, Community Relations Manager at Life Technologies.

Life Technologies is involved with the San Diego Science Festival through a sponsorship of the Nifty-Fifty program, which brings middle and high school students into contact with local scientists in San Diego. “Since our giving focus is geared toward furthering scientific exploration, this project was the best fit for Life Technologies,” says Virdo.

The Nifty-Fifty program has grown from 50 scientists to over 100 scientists speaking at local middle and high schools throughout the duration of the science festival. “I hope that it sparks something inside kids today that will carry them through their future endeavors. It’s important for the biotech industry to employ qualified, capable scientists. With the severe economic cutbacks for today’s educational system, anything that the Science Festival and Life Technologies can do to supplement what the schools are doing can only improve students’ scientific experiences for the future,” says Virdo.

Life Technologies’ commitment to getting kids excited about science will continue at their booth on Expo Day, where participants will be able to play “DNA Races” and learn techniques that are commonly used in research everyday. They will watch their DNA “race” against their friends’ DNA, and scientists will be on hand to explain why some DNA runs faster than others and how this important technique is used in current research. Visit the Life Technologies booth at Balboa Park on Expo Day, April 4th.
