ANNUAL SAN DIEGO SCIENCE FESTIVAL TO HOST COUNTYWIDE EVENTS TO "EXCITE YOUR MIND" IN MARCH 2010

San Diego (February 22, 2010) -The largest celebration of science on the West Coast, held annually in San Diego, promises to once again "excite the minds" of thousands of students and their families March 20-27. In 2010, thanks in part to lead sponsor Life Technologies, the San Diego Science Festival (SDSF) will continue to raise awareness on the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education among San Diego's youth to inspire them to pursue careers in these rewarding fields.
The San Diego Science Festival, in conjunction with the You CAN Do The Rubik's Cube Foundation, have announced the 2010 Rubik's Cube Tournament competition. Eight-member student teams from more than 40 K-12 schools in San Diego County will compete for the fastest collective time in solving 25 Rubik's Cubes. School team will be vying for a share of $5,000 in prize money that will be awarded during the final round to math teachers for use in improving math education.

SAN DIEGO (Nov. 10, 2009) - San Diego's largest celebration of science returns to offer thousands of students and their families the opportunity to "excite their minds." Today, the San Diego Science Festival announced that, in addition to year-round K-12 programs, the 2010 event will bring a week of science activities and exploration to San Diego County, with hundreds of free events beginning March 20, 2010, and culminating in Expo Day at PETCO Park on March 27, 2010.
The San Diego Science Festival will feature citywide events at venues that will include Balboa Park, public libraries, San Diego State University, private companies, UC San Diego, K-12 schools, PETCO Park, and other locations throughout the region. The closing event, Expo Day, will be an interactive exploration of science offering attendees more than 150 hands-on exhibits and experiments by science and technology firms, research labs, universities, and local schools.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals scientists set to visit 10 school sites to explore “A day in the life”.Scientists from Vertex Pharmaceuticals are participating in a “day of service” by visiting some of San Diego’s low income and at-risk youth to share their personal stories of a life in science and to encourage students to pursue careers in science.

San Diego, Ca (July 23, 2009) – The University of California, San Diego has received a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support the 2010, 2011, and 2012 San Diego Science Festivals, as well as fund the creation of the "National Science Festival Network" which will support the growth of Science Festivals nationwide. The grant award follows the highly successful first annual San Diego Science Festival, held March-April 2009.

With no track record to guide it, the event’s organizers and corporate sponsors set out to accomplish something that had never been attempted on such a large scale – to make San Diego the home of the West Coast’s most prestigious science education event.

Guests of all ages can check out music performances, solve puzzles, build structures and immerse themselves in the science that surrounds their everyday lives.
Inspired by international science festivals that draw crowds in the hundreds of thousands, the San Diego Science Festival’s Expo Day in Balboa Park will increase community awareness of science and inspire youth to consider entering science-related careers. Organizations partner to sponsor art contest for San Diego K-12 students; local winners on display at San Diego Science Festival’s “Science as Art” exhibit April 4
CHICAGO, Ill. (April 2, 2009) – Blick Art Materials and Bio-Education and Art for Science Innovation (BioEASI), an organization dedicated to bringing science to the community through art, today announced their partnership in sponsoring the first-of-its-kind art contest to researchers and K-12 students in San Diego schools. The contest, called Science as Art, invited students to submit original artwork based on three scientific disciplines – health, environment or technology.
“We are thrilled to be a part of this project and applaud BioEASI’s mission of using art to bring science to the forefront,” said Bob Buchsbaum, chief executive officer of Blick Art Materials. “There’s a perceived gap between the arts and sciences, and this contest is a perfect example of how students’ creativity is breaking down those barriers in a unique way.”
